Description
This medal was mentioned in the London Gazette 18th July 1941;
'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at Agordat on 31st January 1941. Sergeant Chivers commanded his platoon during the attack on the enemy's position, and throughout the day he led his platoon with marked skill and determination. During the initial advance he realised the ground to his front was open and that he was coming under machine gun fire from a strong position to his left. He skilfully extricated the platoon and led them under cover to another position to be in touch with the Company on his right. Later in the day he took over a portion of the enemy's trenches for the company on his right and during this operation the enemy counter-attacked. He himself personally fired a Bren gun and repulsed the attack, killing fifteen of the enemy. During the whole day his platoon were under machine gun fire of being constantly sniped. Sergeant Chivers showed great skill, determination and power of leadership during the action'.
