Alured Clarke had a stellar military career before his tenure as Colonel of the Regiment. Before becoming Colonel,  Clarke was Lieutenant-Colonel of the Fusiliers and served in the American War of Independence in 1771, he became Governor of Jamaica in 1784 and was made Commander-in-Chief in India in 1798. He was eventually promoted to Field Marshal, the highest rank in the British Army. Clarke served as Colonel of the Regiment until his death in 1832.
